The Direct Instruction Method
Direct Instruction (DI) is a teaching method extensively tested and proven to turn all students into confident learners including at-risk, ESL, special education, and on grade level students. Direct Instruction gives schools a clear path to achieving and even surpassing Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), boosting student confidence and empowering them to believe they too can achieve academic success like their peers.
The Direct Instruction method is based on two core principles:
1. All students can learn when taught correctly, regardless of past history and background
2. All teachers can be successful, given effective teaching materials and presentation techniques
With the powerful combination of Core Instruction and Response to Intervention, teachers have the framework and resource to give time and support to students who are struggling, or working at a slower pace to that of their peers.
An important hallmark of Direct Instruction is its focus on teaching to mastery. Before moving from one concept to the next, all students must demonstrate their understanding to help see the value of what they are learning. This ensures that no student is ever left behind, and gives them the confidence to tackle new challenges. They can progress academically, as well as develop social and emotional learning skills when interacting with their teachers.

Behind Every Program, There Is Pedagogy
The pedgogical framework behind this programm is based on the three D's: Design, Delivery and Documentation.
Design
Gradual introduction and building of skills, followed by reinforcement and assessment, to ensure no students is left behind
Documentation
Built from a foundation of research spanning fifty years, this program presents measurable success in all types of classrooms
Delivery
Scripted lessons following a quick pace involve teachers correcting errors and rewarding achievements to create an environment of positive reinforcement where students can discern between which method is incorrect and correct
Teaching to Mastery
One important hallmark of DI is its focus on teaching to mastery. Before moving from one concept to the next, all students must demonstrate their understanding. This ensures that no student is ever left behind.
Teaching to mastery helps students see the value of what they are learning. Using the skills and concepts they’ve mastered, students build strategies to learn new information faster. This gives them the confidence to tackle new challenges.
Direct Instruction at a Distance
Don't let the idea of delivering DI remotely get you down. Take a look at these support videos from the National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI) showcasing how you can deliver DI programmes at a distance, with special reference to two Literacy programmes; Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading Decoding.
